The Sunne In Gold was a surprisingly delightful read. I found it to be a compelling story line told in a light, easy manner which grips the reader in the first chapter and remains difficult to put down even for a moment.
A medieval fantasy where the hero is a young noblewoman was not so uncommon at the time, but not so well known in ours. The story line seems to stretch the bounds of believability at times, but is quickly brought into line by Nene Adams. Ms. Adams seems to have several controversial and thoughtful issues weaving through the pages of this novel, which she then fills out very nicely while moving the story along at a delightful pace.
Ms. Adams manages to bring out assumptions of the time, prejudices, behaviors and beliefs in a manner that is not preachy or distracting, which indicates her research was extensive rather than left to chance.
The characters were fresh and surprising, and throughout the story remained true to their initial motivations and personalities. By the completion of the story it was easy to feel as if these two were personal friends rather than just characters in a book.
The courageous and lusty Lady Cathelin O'Cameron - known to the English as the awesome knight Blacksunne - returns boldly home from the Crusades only to discover that her family's estate of Inishowen has been usurped by a traitor. Triumphing over her enemies, the fierce Irish warrior who has never known defeat in battle surrenders her heart to a beautiful Muslim slave-girl, though her own soul is scarred deeply by a horrific wounding from the past. Dark family intrigue and jealous envy will try and tear them apart but the greatest threat comes from within. Madrigal harbors many secrets; the one closest to her heart will either bring these women together forever or rend their love asunder in a blaze of obsessive madness and murderous intent. Don't deny yourself the pleasure of the captivating adventure, heart-stopping suspense and unforgettable romance that is... The Sunne in Gold.
Definitely an A+ from me and I am looking forward to the sequel, The Sunne In Scarlet, reported to be released this year. Check out Shady Ladies Press, the publisher's site for other books, but while you are there, order this one for your own home library.
Until next time...
