Our Bodies, Ourselves

Reviewed By: Therese Jansen

Over the holidays I was finally able to sit down and read my newest copy of Our Bodies, Ourselves (very aptly subtitled For the New Century).

This book has been a godsend for women for twenty-five years, and this anniversary volume is no exception.

It all started more than twenty-five years ago when a group of women looked up and realized that there just was not comprehensive health information available for women; that we did not have the tools to know, understand and pamper our own bodies. Just as women were learning and striving to take charge of their lives in other ways, so too was it time to demystify medicine and women's health issues.

This most recent volume is almost 800 pages (paperback) but not at all unwieldy. It is divided up into five easy to understand parts:

  • Taking Care of Ourselves
  • Relationships and Sexuality
  • Sexual Health and Controlling our Fertility
  • Child-bearing
  • Knowledge is Power

Issues specific to age, race and orientation are all handled well. Tips for women who are growing older no less important than those still at the earlier stages of life.

The section on Relationships and Sexuality is exceptionally well done, including equal coverage on our relationships with men and our relationships with women.

By the way, each chapter throughout the book includes resources, both off and online.

While Our Bodies, Ourselves will not replace a doctor or therapist, it truly is a must have on your bookshelf. My suggestion is to buy a copy for yourself to keep on hand for the next time you might need it -- like to understand what the doctor said to you; or to help you diagnose if what you are feeling is the flu or something the doctor should explore.

Since we are talking about books, why don't you share with us a little about your favorite book or books you find indispensable.

Until next time...
