Four From Wishes: A Collection of Stories

Written By: JUDITH K. PARKER
Reviewed By: Lou Danby

Judith K. Parker has two published collections of poetry. Four From Wishes is her first published collection of stories. The title? There are four stories in this collection and Judith’s online handle is Wishes.

The back cover poses questions: Can you survive civilization? Is there someone for everyone? Will you grab your dream or destroy it? and Who will you sacrifice to fulfill your ambition?

Four From Wishes: A Collection of Stories
The sea, opaque as ignorance, swallows the fires we cast upon it. The last packet of paper is pulled from my hands to meet a torch and then the quenching water. What is necessary is not always easy.

A black shape approaches to loom over our craft, to block out the stars that have been our guides. A faint light appears, and a voice calls, a sing-song falsetto meant to carry over slapping waves. "Ahoy the boat. Of what ship are you?"

"The Farragut" is the replay of one of our number.

We hear the caller's natural voice. "A woman. There's a woman on the boat."

Every artist’s greatest desire, whether singing, dancing, acting, painting, or writing is to leave something with her audience. Having read the questions, read the stories, I believe Judith has accomplished this. As I go about my reality of civilization and the questionable reality of my dreams, my mind flits back to these stories.

In The Edge of The World, Judith causes the reader to question the level of peace and contentment derived through material gain. Would we find these more easily living a simpler life?

Satisfaction Guaranteed offers, perhaps, an answer to whether there is someone for everyone; whereas The Dreams and the Dreamer left me somewhere out in space.

A must-read is the longest and this writer’s favorite of the stories. The Battle poses the question, to what lengths will one go to fulfill dreams?
