There are still some peanut and potato chip crumbs in the living room sofa, though the dog has finished the dip. Wine glasses, beer mugs and tea bags are still gathered around the kitchen sink, and the various voting sheets are laying all over the house -- depending on who won or lost. Do you just love watching the Academy Awards?
The red carpet is a combination of things at our lesbian parties. The women are jumping between trying to pick out the closeted lesbian celebrities and leering at the really hot looking actresses at they walk down the carpet. Not surprisingly, the hottest actresses always seem to end up on the closeted list -- also known as the wish list.
Those lesbians who are in relationships will play along, but they are also playing at finding the gay men although they do not end up on anyone's wish list. Sorry, guys!
This year the movie Boys Don't Cry (about the life of Brendan Teena) was included in the mix of pictures going for the best picture, best actress and best director awards. And, amazingly enough, Hilary Shwank won the Oscar for best actress for her portrayal of Brendan Teena. Who would have thought Hollywood was not only willing to make a movie about a pre-op transgender m-to-f woman -- but they nominated the picture for an Oscar and awarded it an Oscar for best actress? I was surprised as anyone, I must say.
Then again, movie that took the Oscar for best picture, American Beauty, also included a gay character though they were careful to make him extremely dysfunctional. Of course all of the characters in that movie were dysfunctional in one way or another, so perhaps this was not an issue of being gay?
Anyway, at the end of the telecast -- where they ask questions of the winners and look to them to make profound statements about the state of the industry -- there was a question asked of Warren Beatty (who received the Thalberg award). The reporter asked Warren's opinion on the possible message sent by the Academy in honoring LGBT characters in them. Mr. Beatty replied [paraphrased] in a puzzled tone, I think the message is that they were good pictures.
From Mr. Beatty's mouth to Hollywood's ear...
Until next time...
