Have you seen Six Days, Seven Nights yet? I have, and I very much enjoyed it. The movie is very much like any old-styled romance. As for the million-dollar question, will Anne Heche be believable as a heterosexual? I have to say yes. I believed she was in love with Harrison Ford, even with the very distinct age difference. I admit to having a little difficulty in believing she was in love with David Schwimmer -- but that is another subject. I must admit that I was not surprised. Anne is, after all, a very talented actress.
I cannot help but note that in almost every movie we see, where two people fall in love, or who are in love, we are expected to ignore that the actors are married and/or seeing someone in real life, who is not their co-star. If the actors do their job properly, the viewing audience does not think of their real life status during the movie. And if the movie is done well, the viewing audience will be carried away with the characters, the story and will never think about real life.
Anne did her job. And not surprisingly, so did Harrison Ford. But that is why they make the big bucks, isn't it?
So why is this was the first question in almost every review I have read or seen on television? In reviewing Ms. Heche's previously seen parts, why would anyone be surprised that the audience should find Anne believable in her role? How many movies must Ms. Heche be in before her talent is recognized -- at least a little more recognized than her sexual orientation?
Or even with all of the previous projects, do they still doubt in her abilities as an actress? Anne has starred in many films, including Wag The Dog, Volcano, Donny Brasco, and so on. In each film, her performance has been rated extremely good. Yet because she has come out as a love interest to Ellen DeGeneres, her talent is in question. Hard to believe anyone is really thinking here.
Personally, I have to believe this doubt is about the same attitude we all encounter every day. The double standard homosexuals face on a regular basis. Homosexuals are obviously different. Everyone can spot a homosexual. They aren't the same as us. It is the need to keep us separate, so we can be thought of as them instead of us.
I applaud Anne Heche for demonstrating that we are capable and talented members of this society. I pray she goes on to more roles like the one in Six Days, Seven Nights. I believe that with each well-played part, she will convince that many more people that we are just like them, like everyone else.
Bravo, Anne!
Until next time...
